WHAT IS BADASS AGEING?

DESPITE the title, Badass Ageing is not about sex, drugs and rock’n roll. It’s about anti ageing badly so we can have fun. And as all the research shows, we’ve got to be fit to have fun.

The problem is that many of us just aren’t active enough to be anywhere near fit.

The result? Too many in the western world suffer from a long list of lifestyle ailments such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease, to name a few. The research is overwhelming – hospitals everywhere are filling up with patients who wouldn’t be there if they’d kept themselves in shape.

Shocking as it is, in many countries half the population over 50 is officially obese.

How does this happen? Apart from the lack of exercise, the blame is put on the usual suspects: sugary drinks, fast food and packaged food, booze, chocolate, bigger dinner plates, you name it. Then there’s the weather – too wet, too cold, too hot, too dark. And to make us feel better, scores of official reports attribute our physical decline to cultural influences that are supposedly beyond our control -- too much television, too busy, the stress of modern life, the decline in competitive sports. It goes on and on.

While these are factors, that’s all they are. If we buy these excuses, we’ll never get fit and have the fun we deserve. This is what Badass Ageing is all about and this site aims to bring together stories, research and my general musings about health and fitness but more importantly how to enjoy yourself as you get older!
